Overview

The Kanji to Padum Grand Traverse via Lingshed, Zangla & Phuktal is not just another long trek in Zanskar. It is a more relevant and far richer modern evolution of the old Lamayuru to Darcha idea, reimagined around the sections that still offer real trekking depth, cultural richness, and wilderness value today.

This is a private premium Zanskar traverse designed for trekkers who value acclimatization, quieter teams, meaningful monastery immersion, stronger mountain support, and thoughtful long-route execution.

Instead of relying on route sections that have gradually lost their original trekking character, this journey begins with acclimatization in Leh, monastery-rich movement through Basgo, Alchi and Lamayuru, and then enters the mountains through Kanji. From there, the traverse unfolds across high passes, remote camps, ancient villages, and some of the most distinctive cultural landscapes in Zanskar, before deepening further through Lingshed, Zangla, Padum, and the dramatic cliffside monastery of Phuktal.

  • A richer modern successor to Lamayuru Darcha with stronger current-day trekking relevance
  • Acclimatization-first planning rather than rushed route compression
  • High guide-to-climber ratio of up to 1:2 for closer support and supervision
  • Private and customized execution based on team strength and travel goals
  • Deep Zanskar immersion through monasteries, villages, high passes, and remote camps

This is best suited for trekkers who want more than a pass-crossing itinerary. It is for those who want a complete journey through the living, spiritual, and geographic character of Zanskar, while still earning the experience through long mountain stages, altitude, and raw Himalayan movement.

This trek is not about collecting places on a map. Done properly, it becomes a complete cultural and mountain traverse through one of the most compelling regions of the Indian Himalaya.

Highlights

  • A long and deeply immersive Zanskar traverse that can be understood as a richer, more current evolution of the classic Lamayuru to Darcha journey.
  • Begins with acclimatization in Leh and monastery-rich access through Basgo, Alchi and Lamayuru before entering the trek from Kanji.
  • Crosses major high-altitude passes including Kanji La, Hanuma La, and Margum La, making it a serious multi-pass Himalayan traverse.
  • Links some of the most compelling cultural locations in Zanskar, including Lingshed, Zangla, Padum and the dramatic cliffside monastery of Phuktal.
  • Combines remote camps, monastery villages, long valley walks, and high pass crossings into a route that feels both culturally rich and geographically complete.
  • Offers a road-resistant trekking experience through sections that still retain strong wilderness and expedition character in today’s changing Zanskar landscape.
  • Includes meaningful monastery immersion beyond the trail itself, with opportunities to explore Karsha, Stongdey, Sani and Phuktal as part of the broader journey.
  • Well suited to experienced trekkers looking for a moderate to difficult Himalayan route with altitude, commitment, and very little interest in comfort-driven trekking.
  • Ideal for those seeking complete digital detox, long-form mountain travel, and a more layered understanding of Zanskar than shorter commercial treks usually provide.
  • Finishes with a more civilized return via Padum and Kargil, allowing the route to remain ambitious without turning the exit into unnecessary logistical punishment.
